Lecture/Demos

Jack Richeson Oils with Connie Lynn Riley

Connie will demonstrate painting a portrait using color , black and white photo reference and digital image. She will also share her color palette, color theory and color mixing thoughts using the beautiful Jack Richeson oil paints to create a portrait in oil.

Native Atlanta, Georgia Artist Connie Lynn Reilly is widely known as a master instructor and painter in classical representational drawing and painting.

Because of her vast experience in the mediums of pastel, oil, watercolor and colored pencil, her art classes are highly sought from beginner to advanced. Connie openly shares her knowledge and expertise in painting portraits in pastel and oil in her, demos, workshops and ongoing portrait course. Her workshops and classes are designed for intermediate to advanced oil and pastel artists.

Her portraits and paintings have received national and international recognition and are owned by private, public and museum collections such as the Booth Museum, Tennessee Tech University, Atlanta History Center, John Bell Hood Society, St Joseph’s Hospital, the Royal Palace of Imir Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa of Bahrain, and the Museum of Church History & Art of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as well as numerous others.

Several of Connie’s portraits and historical works have appeared and have been published in national and international publications. Her pastel portrait of “Christine”, a portrait of a young four year old girl, is featured in a North Light book entitled, “ The Best of Portrait Painting.”

Among her numerous portrait commissions are the portraits for the Royal Family of Bahrain, commissioned by the Al Kahlifa family, including a full length portrait of the Imir’s wife, Her Highness Sheikha Benna, and separate paintings of their two children.

She has been a featured guest on local and national television shows such as the Gwinnett Today Show and WTV21 Talk of the Town, as well as the television cable network, Fine Living on a show entitled “Back to Basics” which was a special program on Connie’s portraiture and portrait process.

Connie’s list of accomplishments also includes the founding of the Southeastern Pastel Society, of which she is President Emeritus and Signature member of Excellence. She is also a Member of the Oil Painters of America and the Portrait Society of America.

She continues to teach classes and workshops to beginners, intermediate, advanced and professional artists.

Winsor & Newton Acrylics with Larry Leach

This session will be a technical demo/lecture with Winsor/Newtons' new acrylic range with pure brilliance (no color shift). I will cover a brief history of Acrylic color and the new unique pigments to professional acrylics, with permanency/lightfastness, opacity/transparency, color bias and tinting power being discussed and demonstrated. The session will also cover mediums, brushes and gesso.

For over thirty years, my work has been concerned with the painted image of the landscape. My favorite theme is the first strong light of dawn and the last strong rays of sunset that rake across the landscape. In the 1970's 80's and 90's, I taught painting and drawing for Louisiana State University and Lamar University in Texas. I have been an outreach artist for Winsor/Newton covering the Southeast U.S for the last 12 years.

R&F :: Exploring Encaustic Painting with Marianna Depetris

Encaustic Demonstration Events are designed to give interested artists a brief introduction to the encaustic process. A skilled R&F trained artist/instructor will speak briefly about the history of encaustic paint and will then demonstrate the different techniques one can use when working with encaustics. He/she will discuss health and safety, studio-set-up and ventilation. A demonstration event offers a relaxed environment where participants will see and experience encaustics firsthand. Topics covered will include: Equipment and tools, Supports and grounds, Layering and fusing methods, Surface effects, etc.

Mariana Depetris' work has been included in numerous international shows in Europe and the Americas. Her awards and residencies include The Pilar and Joan Miró Foundation in Palma de Mallorca, Spain; the Valparaíso Foundation in Almería, Spain and the Centrum Frans Masereel in Kasterlee, Belgium. Ms. Depetris' work is included in collections such as Harvard's David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies; the Flemish Ministry of Culture, Brussels, Belgium; and the Tama Art University Museum in Tokyo, Japan.

Ms. Depetris holds a Licentiate Degree in Fine Arts from the National University of Córdoba, Argentina and a Master of Fine Arts from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia. From 2006 through Summer 2009 she taught Printmaking, Book Arts, Mixed Media and Foundations full time at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA. She also taught Printmaking and Drawing at Kennesaw State University and teaches visiting artist workshops in several locations. Ms. Depetris is currently working on a new body of work and teaching encaustic for R & F Paints, located in Kingston, NY.

Logan Graphic Products :: How to Cut Mats with Mike Grecian

After completing his MFA in drawing and painting from Northern Illinois University in 1975, Michael Grecian worked as a freelance artist in the Chicago area creating corporate logo design, illustration, and commissioned portraits for Dan Ryan Electric, and the Weinstein family. Originally an oil painter, he now works almost exclusively in watercolor and colored pencil, and is a member of the CPSA. He currently works very closely with the Savannah College of Art & Design in Atlanta and Savannah, the Art Institutes and a variety of schools in the Southeastern United States. He also works directly with a variety of artists, and does demonstrations.

Nancy Spielman is a painter living in Boca Raton, Florida. She received her M.F.A. from Florida Atlantic University and prior to that a B.S. from Southern Illinois University, with a major in Graphic Design. Nancy currently teaches Studio Art classes as well as Art Appreciation at Florida Atlantic University and Palm Beach State College. She participates in a contemporary genre called Daily Painters, which focuses on small scale paintings. Her inspiration comes from everyday ordinary encounters. She travels with camera in hand and her photographs are the springboard for her artwork. Nancy received the South Florida Cultural Consortium Award in 2009. This will be a lecture demonstration of mixed media materials and techniques using a combination of traditional and water mixable oils on Canson Art Boards. This is great technique for plein air painting, teaching, or for studies. If you want a crash course about oil painting, you want to be here.

Ed Brickler, Director of the Canson Art Education program, has been an art materials consultant for over 20 years and has lectured on Materials and techniques in art schools across North America. He has taught drawing and painting, and conducted workshops on color mixing, pen and ink, painting, and composition. He is a graduate of Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA, and the Baum School of Art, in Allentown, PA.

Golden :: FRESH PAINT - Lecture and Demo of New Golden Acrylic Paints, Gels and Digital Grounds with Phil Garrett

This Lecture will explore a multitude of new surfaces for painting and collage created with Golden’s Glass Bead Gel, Translucent Molding Pastes, Fiber Paste (paper in a jar), Crackle Paste, and more... Cover mixed media application and layering effects for drawing and painting, including using unique metallic paints, stencils and more.

I'll cover the new digital grounds that allow transferring your digital images onto a multitude of flat surfaces: non-porous papers, acetate, acrylic skins, even aluminum foil. We will cover some of the technical challenges of working with inkjet printers and explore ideas for incorporating these images in paintings and works on paper.

The rest of the lecture will be an introduction to the New Golden OPEN Acrylics and their use. These paints have an extended working time that can give painters much more control of blending and overall manipulation to achieve wonderful controlled effects.

They can be used alone or in combination with existing Heavy Body, and Fluid Acrylics and their mediums, gels and additives. This gives painters a truly comprehensive system of Paints.

Phil Garrett did his undergraduate work at the University of South Carolina, and the Honolulu Academy, studying under Gabor Peterdi. He received his BFA at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1974. His work is in numerous public and private collections, including the Bank of America, and the State Collections of South Carolina and Hawaii. He is represented by Hodges-Taylor Gallery, Charlotte, North Carolina, Fresh Paint in Culver City California and the Pelter Gallery in South Carolina He has completed numerous artists’ residencies, taught painting, mural painting, printmaking, and watercolor, in Museum Schools and educational programs in the Southeast. He joined the Golden Artist Colors Working Artist Program eight years ago, and teaches acrylic painting in numerous venues. His prints and paintings are in public and Private collections in the USA , Europe and Japan . In October 2005 and 2006 he Lectured and taught workshops on Acrylic Painting Methods in Art Schools in the cities of Osaka, Tokyo ,Nagoya , Kyoto and Fukuoka Japan sponsored by Golden Acrylic and Turner company of Osaka. In the Fall of 2010 Phil taught an 8 week concentration at The Penland School of Craft in North Carolina. His work will be Featured in 100 ARTIST OF THE SOUTH By Ashley Rooney to be published in 2012.
