Comics are a powerful form of communication!  This exciting new course will examine the principles of visual storytelling including drawing fundamentals, anatomy, and perspective; design considerations for characters, props, environments, and the compositional concerns of panel and page layout will also be covered. All aspects will serve to strengthen the clarity of a visual narrative, whether in the form of short strips, episodic comic books, or graphic novels. In addition, the specific processes of comic creation will be discussed and demonstrated including thumbnails, penciling, inking, lettering, coloring, and handmade books. Finally, creation of comics digitally will be addressed. Topics and demos will be tailored to the aspirations of the students. This class will be open to youth and adults.

Instructor Bio:

Jacob Hunt has been reading comics since the fourth grade, starting with Calvin & Hobbes and Marvel superheroes. He has always written just as much as he has drawn, so in due course, that’s what he studied throughout college. In 2004, he received his bachelor’s in illustration and creative writing from the University of  Georgia. For the next few years, he published a humorous, semi-autobiographical comic strip entitled, My Doomed Affair, in which his fictional alter-ego tormented his ex-girlfriend. Eventually, Jacob decided to enroll at SCAD-Atlanta to earn his MFA in sequential art, which is academic jargon for “comics.” Having completed graduate school in 2013, Jacob is currently developing a hilarious graphic novel about an Amish teenager who inadvertently stumbles upon a parallel reality. Alongside all of this, Jacob also managed to work in special education for several years and front a well-liked if virtually unknown rock-and-roll band called Tracer Metula.
