ARTZ1616 | Wednesdays, January 6th – 27th 6pm - 8pm
Most of us experience trepidation and a bit of anxiety when we paint. "Painters block" is a very real phenomenon. Experimental Painting is a wonderful way to show the artist the benefit of opening the door to a less rigid and more fluid way to painting. As a class we will begin to understand the value of your own personal vision while learning further about color theory, 2D design, and abstract and conceptual theories. Subjects we will touch on: modern art thinking, painting concepts, the importance of the under painting and brush stroke movement. All skill levels can benefit from this class. There are no limits to what you can do. *This class is designed for acrylics.
WEEK ONE: Beginning to understand the importance of complementary colors, under painting, negative vs. positive spaces, inner concept intent. We will touch on how the modern masters approach painting and used these techniques. Small exercise of copying a portion of a modern master will start our process.
WEEK TWO: Exercises on expressing your vision. The outer painting, matching colors to content and visual spacing on the picture plane will be the main focus. Quick drawings with dry brush will pull the painter out of the slow methodical brushstroke and pull them into a more energetic dynamic.
WEEK THREE: Reinterpreting objects psychologically. A study of objects will be the focus of our work this day. We will paint with different sorts of brushes and with different sorts of emotional values.
WEEK FOUR: Let it go. Completing our canvases and reassessing what excited us in the first place about painting. Collaborative painting exercise where one starts the work and another finishes it.
